José Felipe Alvergue writes and works in Wisconsin.
A graduate of both the Cal Arts Writing (MFA) and Buffalo Poetics (PhD) programs, José engages both critical and creative language, often bridging them, overlapping them, and subverting them.
José’s third book of poetry, scenery, was selected by Fordham University Press as the winner of the Poets Out Loud Editor’s Prize. He was also selected as the winner of Tupelo Quarterly’s TQ16 Open Prize, and has been a finalist for the Wisconsin State Poet Laureate. His newest book purplish, a work of autotheory, is out with the University of Iowa Press, and his newest work of what he calls “sonnet-essays,” en el norte/soy del sur will be out with Omnidawn in Spring 2026. José is currently accepting invitations for readings, workshops, and visits. Please click here to book.
